What are Dental Fillings?
A filling is typically used to replace areas in a tooth that have become decayed. Tooth decay, or a cavity, can get worse over time. When left untreated, tooth decay can eventually get to the point of affecting the inner pulp. Before the decay is able to get this bad, we will remove it and quickly place a filling to restore the tooth.
Why are Dental Fillings needed?
We can examine your teeth to determine if a filling is needed. If you have a cavity, we will recommend having the tooth filled as soon as possible. This prevents the decay from getting worse and creating the need for either a root canal or a larger filling. With bi-annual dental checkups, we can spot cavities as they form to ensure quick and adequate treatment.
Who is a good candidate for Dental Fillings?
Most patients who have a cavity are good candidates for a filling. In fact, fillings can be utilized for both adult and pediatric patients. Tooth decay is often caused by poor brushing and eating habits, but some people are simply more susceptible to decay than others. If the decay has gotten too severe, the tooth may need a complete root canal rather than a simple filling.
What happens during the Dental Filling process?
We will start the procedure by administering an anesthetic to numb the area. We then remove the decay from the tooth. The tiny hole that’s left behind is prepped for the new filling material by using a bonding agent. The composite resin filling is then matched to the tooth and placed into the hole. It’s smoothed into place and cured with a special light. Your new filling should last for many years before needing to be replaced. Composite resin fillings are tooth-colored, and blend in well with the rest of your smile.
