Wisdom Teeth Removal
What is Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Your wisdom teeth are typically the very last to come in. It’s not uncommon for them to begin to show on dental x-rays around the time a person is 18. Unfortunately, most patients do not have enough room for the wisdom teeth to come in fully. This causes them to become impacted, which means they are unable to come through the gums.
Why is Wisdom Teeth Removal needed?
If your wisdom teeth are impacted, they should be removed as soon as possible. They can cause a variety of different problems later on if they are left in place. Not only can impacted wisdom teeth be painful and cause inflammation on their own, but they may even damage surrounding teeth. If your teeth are straight right now, leaving your wisdom teeth in could lead to an overcrowded or crooked smile over time.
Who is a candidate for Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Dr. Ju will examine your smile to determine if you need wisdom tooth removal. It is best to have these teeth removed as soon as possible to prevent future problems from developing. We can often see these teeth on special x-rays, which can be taken right in our office. Regardless of age, if your wisdom teeth are a problem, it’s recommended that they be taken out.
What happens during Wisdom Teeth Removal?
The first step is to have a consultation with you. This will help us to determine the positioning of the wisdom teeth, as well as the type of sedation or anesthetic that you want. For the procedure, we create an incision into the gums and remove the underlying wisdom tooth. The gums are sutured, and the process is repeated for any and all wisdom teeth. You can expect some pain and swelling after surgery, but it is important to keep the area clean to help in the healing process. Your oral health will be benefited from having these wisdom teeth removed.
